CANADA TO MEXICO, SOLO - 2006

Why would you want to do that?!

For years I had dreamed about getting on my bicycle and simply keeping on pedalling and in 2006 my dream came true. After giving up my job, saying goodbye to friends and packing everything I needed into my panniers, I got on my bike and pedalled 2,000 miles (3,600km) over 7 weeks in May and June, 2006 from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico.

Before the ride, I was full of trepidation. Was I physically capable of biking that far? As a woman traveling alone, would I be safe? Would I get lonely or bored? My fears disappeared as I gained confidence along the way. I found that if I concentrated on the present day and didn't think in terms of the thousand miles ahead of me, I felt capable of anything.

This website is intented both as photojournal for those curious about my trip and a resource for those who would like to ride this route.

At the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco I met a German couple who were cycling this route for the second time. When I heard this, I thought they were crazy - I couldn't understand why you'd want to do the same route again when there are so many other beautiful places to ride to. I have since changed my mind. Looking back over my photos, I would love to revisit all these places. There were many places at which I didn't get to spend enough time. So I reckon I'll be back one day!

Enjoy the photos.
